13 Roof Framing
About the course
This lesson begins with a platform-framed house; ready for a roof system. Different styles of roofs are discussed including gable, hip, gambrel, clerestory, shed, flat, mansard and butterfly. Next the parts of a roof are discussed. This includes identifying the peak or ridge, eave, rake, overhang, valley, hip, styles of dormers and chimney crickets. The three basic types of roof systems are covered: rafter, post and beam, and truss. The components of the rafter system are explained including the way rafters are cut and supported, the use of a ridge beam and collar ties, how rafters are tied to walls, and the correct placement of rough fascia boards.
