About the course
The two basic types of wood roofs are shakes and wood shingles. Although they look similar from a distance, there are important differences. The lesson begins with a discussion about how to identify each roof. Also covered is how to identify the quality of both shakes and wood shingles. The exposure of the shakes or wood shingles is discussed next as well as the installation pattern. The style of roof sheathing beneath the shakes or wood shingles is reviewed and its impact on the wood roof is discussed. Installation of shake shingles is covered in detail along with common installation mistakes. The installation discussion includes the proper placement of roofing felt, the starter course, nailing, and more. Wood shingle installation is covered next and includes information about ridges and valleys.
