This lesson begins with a discussion of laundry room finishes including catch pans and laundry sinks. A discussion of stair finishes follows. Several types of treads and risers are covered including stain-grade, false treads and risers, and covered treads and risers. Starting steps are reviewed. Next is a discussion about stair newel posts and balustrades. Techniques for determining the quality of an existing balustrade are reviewed including the type of material and the complexity. Typical installation techniques are reviewed and include features such as a volute, a goose neck, a quarter or half turn, and a rosette. Correct installation is reviewed including the importance of planning, proper installation of the newel post, and installation of the rails and balusters. Finishing the balustrade is covered next. Specialty stairs such as curved stairs and spiral stairs are reviewed. The lesson ends with common carpet installation techniques for stairs.
