HVAC, Part 1
Course 36

About the course

The first of two lessons covering residential heat, vent, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. The lesson begins with a review of basic heating concepts including the thermostat, forced-air systems, boilers and radiators, heat exchangers, heating zones, ducts, BTUs, and furnace efficiency. A discussion of different types of heating fuels follows along with the types of heating systems that use them. The use of flues to vent burning fuels is reviewed as is the combustion chamber. Carbon monoxide dangers are discussed. The heat exchanger for several types of systems are reviewed including forced-air systems, boiler systems, solar systems, and pulse systems. Ventilation issues in newer, tighter homes are covered. Next, the lesson covers air conditioning systems beginning with a discussion about how AC units work and then covering their installation. The lesson concludes with a discussion of heat pumps, how they work to both heat and cool, and how they are installed.
